From its first conception in 1976, the Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak collection for women has expectedly undergone transformations. Yet despite introducing effeminate elements, the timepieces never sacrificed its signature design or lines. Today, that savoir-faire of mixing masculinity with femininity continues with the launch of the new Royal Oak Frosted Gold, in time for the line's 40th birthday.
For this unique timepiece, the Swiss watchmaker turned to jewellery designer Carolina Bucci. Bringing her artisanship to the horological world, Bucci introduced the maison to the Florentine gold technique, an age-old hammering craft. "By treating the finish of the gold with a Florentine effect, you have added nothing to the watch, nor subtracted anything – just altered the surface of the gold to make it sparkle when catching the light," explained Bucci. "In doing so, the watch becomes something entirely fresh and confident."
The delicate process involves the use of a diamond-tipped tool and when used to beat the gold, causes tiny dents on the surface that allow for the material to sparkle. "Everybody knows about the quality and craftsmanship of Audemars Piguet, but perhaps by injecting this feminine sensibility, people see a new side – something a bit more flamboyant and exuberant with just as much attention to detail," said Bucci.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Frosted Gold is available in white and pink gold, and in 33mm and 37mm. Each variation is limited to only 150 pieces and will be available in boutiques from March 2017. Also don't miss the Audemars Piguet Diamond Fury watch.
