Buro 24/7 Middle East Interview: Lilian Afshar, founder of L'Afshar
An exclusive look at L'Afshar's latest clutches
This week, Dubai-based designer Lilian Afshar unveiled her new collection of sleek geometric clutches. The unique insect logo is now seen on an array of unusual faux materials like marble, rock crystal and slate.
The successful brand first appeared on the fashion scene last year, when the bug-adorned acrylic clutches were seen buzzing around fashion shows and international magazines from Dubai to Paris.
In addition to this new collection, Afshar also collaborated with Emirati talent, Madiyah Al Sharqi, to create a special pastel pink and creamy white clutch for the designer's Fall/Winter 2014 collection.
As L'Afshar flies to new heights in the fashion world, Buro 24/7 Middle East sits down with the designer for a deeper insight into her newest mixed material collection...
Why did you choose accessories – as opposed to ready-to-wear or jewellery?
Personally, accessories are much more exciting and thrilling to purchase and to wear. I guess this forceful feeling of mine led me down to the path I'm on today. I feel that designing clutches is a mixture of architecture and art, the final outcome is more focused and eye catching.
What inspired you for this collection?
The inspiration behind this collection was to capture the essence and stillness of winter. The colours, textures and geometric sharp shapes portray the crisp, chilled, crystallised and delicate aspect of an icy winter. The theme creates a very ethereal, sleek and modern collection.
Talk us through the materials and how the pieces are made.
In this collection four textures are used in as many different shapes/sizes. The cracked ice translates the clear, sharp, delicate aspect of ice whilst the unpredictable, smooth grey lines in the Marble make each clutch a unique piece. Glitter is something that I personally have always been drawn to, think the infatuation started from seeing Dorothy's red glitter slippers from the Wizard of Oz. As for the Grey opaque, Grey is a neutral or achromatic colour which I feel is reminiscent to London's gloomy grey skies.
What's your biggest ambition?
For my bug (brand) to travel the world and fly into the windows of Bergdorf Goodman.
Who would you most love to see wearing L'Afshar?
Diana Vreeland would be my ultimate wish!
L'Afshar's Fall/Winter 2014 collection will be available at The Luxury Arcade in Abu Dhabi and Cugini in Jeddah in July.
