PFW spotlight: Sonia Rykiel, Valentino, Givenchy

The shows everyone is talking about
Paris Fashion Week is nearing its end but not before these designers had a chance to get everyone talking...

Paris Fashion Week S/S ’19 has almost come to an end. It’s been an exciting season, to say the least, with Hedi Slimane most notably making his debut at Celine earlier this week to much discussion within the industry.

In the past 24 hours, the likes of Givenchy, Valentino and Sonia Rykiel have showed their new season collections and each had the fash pack’s attention. Find out why below…

Sonia Rykiel

What you need to know: According to the show notes, Julie de Libran, the brand’s Artistic Director, was inspired by all of the women who have been involved in Sonia Rykiel, including the designer, over the years. It was a celebration of Parisian dressing at its most beautiful with hand-woven knits, oversize trench coats and midi skirts and dresses, as well as louche tailoring dominating the runway.

A momentous occasion: This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Sonia Rykiel brand and to honour the late designer and her contribution to fashion, the city of Paris unveiled a new street named after her ahead of the beginning of the show.

Valentino

Valentino

What you need to know: Valentino’s S/S ’19 collection began with a collection of black dresses that elegantly toed the line between couture and casual. Colour was introduced soon atfer in the form of red, orange, white and burgundy and perfect pleating gave mini and midi dresses an oh-so chic finish. There were prints too, with bold graphics in purple, green, yellow and aqua adorning floor-length pieces as well as feather-accented separates, plus evening-ready dresses with just the right amount of sparkle.

Key moments: There were plenty of Instagrammable moments at Pierpaolo Picciolo’s S/S ’19 presentation but there were two that stood out (all over our Instagram feeds, too). Firstly, the models stormed the runway sporting vibrant sparkling green eye makeup that we’re saving as Halloween makeup inspo, and the second was the giant hats that adorned models heads. Perfect for your next dramatic entrance.

Givenchy

What you need to know: Held at the Palais de Justice, Givenchy’s S/S ’19 show displayed a collection that was made for the modern woman. Loose silk shirts were tucked into high waisted trousers (was Clare Waight Keller inspired by her newest client, the Duchess of Sussex, for these looks perhaps?), midi dresses were expertly pleated and suits were finished in shades of lilac and camel to stylish effect. Bags were emblazoned with the brand’s name and sunglasses were embellished with crystal fringing because, you know, fashion. Finally, a collection of eveningwear pieces sashayed down the runway shining with sequins and gilded fringing.

What the industry is saying: Following Hedi Slimane’s debut at Celine, many in the industry are suggesting that Clare Waight Keller is the new Phoebe Philo, in that the pieces she’s designing for Givenchy will attract the Philophiles moving forward.
