Valentino creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli took inspiration from the concept of multiculturalism in their Cruise 2016 collection: "We are interested in the idea of  harmony that combines different worlds, creating an aesthetic that is really contemporary because it's the fruit of free associations," said Chiuri, who also mentioned music festivals such as Glastonbury and Coachella as part of these associations.

The folky festival influence is certainly evident, with heavy embroidery and embellishment being the crown in the design jewel of the collection. Navajo inspired decorative elements, geometric motifs and embroidering inspired by nature all prevail on the soft gowns and structured coats.
