Lacoste, Theory, Helmut Lang and J Brand ban the use of mohair

Following an exposé by animal rights group PETA
Another set of fashion brands have banned the use of a controversial material. Here's what you need to know...

It’s been a big year for animal rights in fashion with a series of brands renouncing the use of furs and skins. Most recently, Chanel announced it would no longer use exotic skins to craft its handbags or fur in its ready-to-wear collections. Now, four new brands have announced they’ll be banning the use of mohair moving forward.

Following an exposé on the harvesting methods of mohair (which comes from angora goats), J Brand, Theory, Helmut Lang and Lacoste have officially decided to no longer use the controversial material in collections. The move follows luxury brands like Ralph Lauren and high street giants ASOS, Zara and H&M who banned the material earlier this year. The report, done by animal rights group PETA, found that mohair farmers in South Africa (where 50 per cent of the world’s mohair supply comes from) were treating the angora goats inhumanely.

The announcement is the latest in a line of animal-friendly announcements from fashion brands and we suspect 2019 might bring even more.
