Buro 24/7 Exclusive: Deena Aljuhani-Abdulaziz collaborates with Nathalie Trad
It's in the DNA
Nathalie Trad is fast becoming the name to know in cool, (and collaborative) clutch design. As a Parsons graduate, the accessories designer, whose collections have quietly taken hold of the fashion industry's attention in recent months, are made up of intricately assembled shell clutches that boast a modern, hand-crafted approach to luxury; one which has garnered her a following among celebrities such as Sienna Miller, Olivia Palermo, Karolina Kurkova and Leandra Medine.
For Autumn/Winter 14, the Lebanese, Dubai-based designer collaborated with Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz – the co-founder and director of D'NA, a super influential members-only fashion emporium with outposts in Riyadh and Doha, to create an exclusive collection reflecting the boutique's sensibility.
It's a true showcase of contemporary luxury, and East-meets-West style, fusing fine materials and techniques to produce artisanal, gem-like clutches with four distinct styles: The Adler, The Dixon, The Leon and The Raleigh.
"Creating this capsule collection for D'NA was both an adventure and a labour of love, as I began by researching and discussing ideas with Deena," says Trad, who looked to the Art Deco movement of the 20s and '30s as a starting point for the collection.
This began by studying modern geometric cigarette cases, minaudières, and compacts created by the haute jewellers of the period; looking at the intricate settings and techniques used. The furnishings and designs of Jean Prouvé and Jean Michele Frank have also influenced the designer's choice of materials such as copper, shell and wood, in addition to a special trompe-l'œil technique used to mimic marble.
"We wanted to tap into this luxurious deco sensibility by creating a collection of clutches that are both irresistible objects of desire as well as precious heirlooms meant to be passed down from one generation to the next," noted Trad, who points out that no two hand-crafted clutches are alike.
The collaboration will be available exclusively at D'NA and online via Farfetch.com from September 29.
