Following an elegant cocktail reception at the Four Seasons, Florence, the previous evening, the inaugural Condé Nast International Luxury Conference kicked off in earnest yesterday with headline speakers, Jony Ive and Marc Newson, drawing huge crowds for their discussion with conference host Suzy Menkes, about their latest Apple Watch creation and how technology fits into the luxury landscape.

The lively discussion revealed that Ive and Newson believe that they are re-engaging a generation in the concept of a watch as a luxury item, but also confessed that they don't see themselves in competition with other more tradition luxury items.

Karl Lagerfeld spoke a bit about digital matters, proudly displaying his exclusive Apple Watch, before confessing to never keeping anything on a digital platform "its all in my head," said the Chanel and Fendi creative director (more about that here).

Antoine Arnault represented Berluti and its parent company, LVMH, helmed by his father Bernard Arnault, also spoke about technology in the luxury world.

The day also heard from Frédéric Cumenal, CEO at Tiffany & Co and Michele Norsa, CEO of Salvatore Ferragamo. While the conference audience was teeming with recognisable faces, and even some royal ones. Discover the picture gallery below of the day one of the conference.
