There aren't many social media platforms that can boast that they have had a profound impact on fashion, and there certainly aren't any that can say "The CFDA is publishing a book about me!" Instagram founder Kevin Systrom, who courted the fashion industry at PFW earlier this year, will surely be elated.

After Systrom rubbed shoulders with the likes of Lagerfeld and Suzy Menkes, the CFDA announced that it would be honouring the social media giant with the 'Media Award in Honour of Eguenia Sheppard' at the upcoming CFDA Awards – marking the first ever time the gong has been presented to a business over an individual. Impressive stuff. But now the U.S governing body on fashion has gone one step further, announcing a book dedicated to Instagram titled Designers on Instagram: #Fashion.

At the launch party for the book on Wednesday at Bloomingdale's in New York, CFDA CEO Steven Kolb was asked by Fashionista why he is publishing a book of photographs that are available online for free, and selling it. "The books that really are popular are the ones that give a glimpse into the lives of designers, and Instagram is such an inside look at a person's life," Kolb explained. "So we just thought populating that all together in a print book... would be a good way to share that insider glimpse."

The book will hit shelves on April 14 and will showcase photos that designers have posted to their Instagram accounts. The CFDA is also shaking up its own online presence, hiring a new editorial and communications director from WWD, Marc Karimzadeh. The website will feature more online content, and curated stories. The CFDA Awards will take place on June 1.
