André Leon Talley will honour his friend and iconic design Oscar de la Renta with a special exhibition, set to take place at the SCAD Museum of Art next month

Scheduled to open February 3 at the SCAD Musuem of Art, André Leon Talley has announced his plans to honour his good friend Oscar de la Renta with the celebratory exhibition.

Following de la Renta's sad death after a long battle with illness in October 2014, Talley proposed the exhibition idea to his son-in-law and the chief executive officer of the designer’s company Alex Bolen. Bolen and his wife Eliza loved the idea, and after considering it gave Talley the green light for the special exhibition.

“First of all, Andre and Oscar have been friends for about a thousand years,” Bolen said. “We have immense respect for Andre’s professionalism, and we also love him.”

70 iconic ensembles will go on display – including Eliza Bolen's own Oscar de la Renta bespoke wedding dress, and pieces worn by the likes of Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker. The pink Oscar de la Renta gown that Taylor Swift wore to last year’s Charles James-themed Met Ball and the velvet dress that Hillary Clinton wore for her 1998 Vogue cover will also be on show at the SCAD Museum of Art come February.

Talley discussed the emotional turmoil that came with curating the exhibition, in particular when arranging for the de la Renta-designed dress that Elizabeth Cordry wore to her wedding in June, which was the last time Talley saw de la Renta:

“I had to put on a requiem from Mozart. I turned it off quickly, but I put it on because it was such a moment. The dress was so beautiful and that was the last time I saw him, and I had been to fittings with Elizabeth for that dress. It was Requiem, K. 626 Sir Georg Solti, recorded live in Vienna to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s death in 1991,” Talley said. “The whole thing has been done out of a sense of love and to celebrate Oscar, what he meant to American fashion and his style.”

Talley is also working on a book to honour the celebrated, iconic designer, which is set to be published by Rizzoli in September and will be titled Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style.
