Adidas has made history with the unveiling of the Ultraboost Uncaged Parley running shoe. Teaming up with environmental movement Parley for the Oceans, the sporting brand utilises plastic and polyester from the ocean clean-up operation in the Maldives to create the first mass-produced footwear collection of its kind.

Revolutionary techniques – to transform plastic to yarn fibres – were engineered and every inch of the shoe, from the heel cap to the webbing, lining, sock-line cover and even the laces are 100% made from recycled materials. Meanwhile, the wavy aesthetic design reflects the ocean waves from which it originates.

"This represents another step on the journey of Adidas and Parley for the Oceans," said Eric Liedtke, Adidas' Group Executive Board member, before continuing that "we won't stop there. We're now committed to scaling those initiatives. We will make one million pairs of shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic in 2017 – and our ultimate ambition is to eliminate virgin plastic from our supply chain."

The Adidas Ultraboost Uncaged Parley shoe is priced at Dhs895 and is now available at adidas.com. As well, discover the second collection of Adidas Originals by Rita Ora
