Ralph Lauren launches the Polo Bear holiday collection
Lauded as 'the best dressed bear in the world'
Few fashion icons are as adorable as the Polo Bear. Since making his debut in 1991, the Polo Bear has worn some of Ralph Lauren's most iconic looks and established himself as one of the brand's most enduring motifs.
The Polo Bear was born when Jerry Lauren, brother of Ralph and the Creative Director of men's design at the brand, was gifted a Steiff bear in 1990 in his likeness. That same year, Ralph also received a bear and the idea was born.
In 1991, the Polo Bear made its global debut and the limited edition collection (there were just 200 bears made) sold out in one weekend at the brand's Madison Avenue flagship store. It was then reimagined as a motif, adorning everything from shirts to jackets and ties.
Some of the most memorable moments in the Polo Bear's history include the female iteration made with the same outfit worn by Naomi Campbell in the 1997 runway presentation, and Kanye West sporting the motif on the jumper he wore on the cover of his standout debut album, College Dropout, in 2004.
This season, the brand is bringing the Polo Bear back to full effect. In addition to adorning pieces in the brand's collection for the Olympic Winter Games, the bear will also have three toy versions released (the Telluride Bear in black and cream, and the Explorer Bear). The motif makes an appearance again too, with several new sweater styles depicting the bear in various outfits.
