Ibtihaj Muhammad recently made Olympic history last year — she was the first US Olympian to compete in a hijab — and now, the American sabre fencer will be releasing a Barbie, also the first to wear a hijab. As part of Mattel's Barbie Shero program, which is designed to recognise women who encourage female empowerment, will come complete with a white fencing uniform

Sharing the news via Instagram, the Time's 100 Most Influential sports star said: "Thank you Mattel for announcing me as the newest member of the Barbie Shero family! The Barbie Shero Program recognises women who break boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls and I am so excited to join this incredible group of women. I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true."

The Ibtihaj Muhammad Barbie will be available in 2018. While no further details have been announced, in other barbieland news, don't miss the Barbie x Charlotte Olympia capsule collection
