Barbara Bernát is an illustrator and graphic designer who has designed a set of conceptual banknotes that will surprise you. The creative has intricately designed the notes as part of her MA degree project – the pieces feature European animals on one side and a related plant on the other that grow in size as the value increases.

Using the original proportions of a Euro banknote and the standard prints – the bill has a secret concealed beneath the surface: Bernát has ingeniously hidden the skeletal structure of the animal using steganography, drawn in security ink that banks use to prevent counterfeiting it can be seen under an ultraviolet light.

"I designed and prepared five denominations of 10 etchings, all etched on separate copper plates. This subtle and refined form of reproduction enabled me to imitate the original technique used during the production of banknotes, intaglio printing. My goal was to create a complete series with clear design, that transcends the tradition of banknote making."
