The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, has appointed actress Cate Blanchett as a global Goodwill Ambassador. Prior to accepting the role, the Oscar winner had visited Jordan where she witnessed the scale of the humanitarian efforts in bringing aid to the displaced people caused by the conflict in Syria.

"It feels like we're at a fork in the road, do we go down the compassionate path or do we go down the path of intolerance?" said Blanchett. "As a mother, I want my children to go down the compassionate path. There's much more opportunity, there's much more optimism and there is a solution down that path."

Blanchett will now join the likes of Angelina Jolie and Sophia Loren as a Goodwill Ambassadors for the cause.
