Ahead of the opening of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the museum are staging a pre-opening exhibition titled – Seeing Through Light: Selections from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Collection. The showcase was designed to introduce the future museum's curatorial vision through a themed exhibition focussed on light, which will see 19 international artists taking part. Forming one of the foundation pieces of the exhibition, will be Canadian-Mexican artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's interactive display Pulse Corniche, that will see the sky above Abu Dhabi turn into an interactive art display of pulsing light.

Specially designed for Abu Dhabi, Pulse Corniche is an interactive canopy of powerful light beams projected into the sky by some of the world's strongest robotic searchlights. The brightness and movement of the lights are controlled by the heart-beat of the visitor, which is translated through a hand held sensor. Using highly technical transmitters the pulse of whomever holds the sensors is converted into electrical activity which acts like a conductor for the lighting sequence. The intensity and direction of the lights projects the different biometric rhythms of each participant.

Lozano-Hemmer's concept was inspired by Roberto Gavaldon's film Macario (Mexico, 1960) and its incarnation in Abu Dhabi is the culmination of a series of interactive public artworks that debuted at the 2007 Venice Bienniale with Pulse Room.

The exhibition Seeing Through Light: Selections from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Collection unfolds through five sections that examine light in various iterations: activated, celestial, perceptual, reflected, and transcendent. There is an fully immersive exhibition programme with a wide variety of talks and exhibitions.
