Producer David Ellison exclaimed that there is "no Top Gun without Maverick" as he announced the news that a sequel to the hugely successful eighties film is in the works, implying that Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as US naval fighter pilot, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell.

The new film is set to look at the world of fighter pilots vs unmanned drones, as Ellison explains: "When you look at the world of dogfighting, what's interesting about it is that it's not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out... and what that culture is today, are all fun things that we're gonna get to dive into in this movie."

Cruise has commented on the news by saying: "If we can get over some stumbling blocks it will be fun to do," implying that there might have been some script or production friction, but we're sure it is in everyone's interest to work them out. We will have to wait and see who his new wingman will be in the sequel...
