Fun fact: You've probably definitely been pronouncing Arya Stark's name incorrectly
Here's what it should be
You know we're just weeks away from the debut episode of the final season of Game of Thrones and we've only just learnt how to correctly pronounce one of the main characters' names. Though, we're pretty certain that a) we're not alone, and b) you can't blame us (some of the names are not so run-of-the-mill). Anyway, we're talking about Arya Stark.
Speaking to Sky Atlantic this week, Maisie Williams, who plays the iconic character, finally revealed the correct pronunciation. "So the 'correct' pronunciation of Arya is 'Ah-Yah'. Michelle [Fairley, who played Catelyn Stark] said that in the first series and then we've had to say it that ever since." However... "I'm going to put this right once and for all," she added. "You pronounce it 'Arr-Ee-Yah' and that's the way it's supposed to be said."
All clear? Not quite, as creator George R.R. Martin has previously agreed that the correct pronunciation is Fairley's. "I say it 'Arr-Yuh', two syllables, not three. Not 'aria' like an operatic thing but 'Arr-Yuh'. Very sharp."
Confused? Yeah us too. But with only one season left, we'll probably just continue to stumble over it. Unless she turns out to be the ultimate champion/Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms then we'll definitely need to know how to say it correctly.
