Alan Rickman has passed away after losing his battle with cancer. The news came from his family in London today, while his agent has also confirmed the tragic loss. A statement released by Rickman's family said: "The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends." 

The actor, best known for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movie franchise, won a Bafta for playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

The news of Rickman's death comes just days after another British icon, musician David Bowie, also died after suffering from cancer.
