Shakespeare and Company, Paris, France

Shakespeare and Company is the name of two independent bookstores on Paris's Left Bank. The first was opened was a gathering place for writers such as Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce and Ford Madox Ford, and closed in 1940 during the war.

The second is situated at 37 rue de la Bûcherie, in the 5th arrondissement – it opened in 1951 and was originally named 'Le Mistral' but renamed to 'Shakespeare and Company' in tribute to the original bookstore. Today, it serves both as a shop and library, specialising in English-language literature, and was featured in the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris...

Livraria Lello,  Porto, Portugal

To use its full name, Livraria Lello & Irmano, is one of the oldest bookshops in Portugal. The actual company goes back to the establishment of the 'Livraria Internacional de Ernesto Chardron' in 1869. Today, the established store is registered as "Sociedade José Pinto Sousa Lello & Irmão", with premises that stands decorated in Art Nouveau, with some features of the Gothic Revival. In 2011, the travel publishing company Lonely Planet classified Livraria Lello as the best bookstore in the world...

El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires, Argentina

El Ateneo is a bookshop converted from an old theatre in downtown Buenos Aires. Over a million people walk through its doors annually. Chairs are provided throughout the building, including the still-intact theatre boxes, where customers can dip into books before purchase, and a café sits at the back of what was once the theatre's stage. The ceiling is made up of ornate carvings and the crimson velvet stage curtains, auditorium lighting and many other architectural details remain. Despite the changes, the building still retains the feeling of the grand theatre it once was...
