In the spirit of women empowering women, designer Diane von Furstenberg has teamed up with mixed-media artist Ashley Longshore to create a curated art collection of powerful women for International Women's Day...

This Friday 8 March, it's International Women's Day. And so far in the lead up to the day celebrating all women around the world, a lot of brands have jumped on the marketing train – sans conceit, obviously.

Banana Republic dropped a capsule collection in honour of the day and Net-a-Porter collaborated with six leading designers (among them Victoria Beckham and Rosie Assoulin) to create T-shirts emblazoned with empowering messages.

And now, the equally ardent feminist Diane von Furstenberg is joining – but, she's going on a bigger scale with a curated art collection in collaboration with mixed media artist Ashley Longshore, of strong and powerful women, both present and in history. The collection will go on sale from the designer's New York store in the Meatpacking district.

DVF came up with a list of women who inspired her through their energy and achievements and together, she and Longshore got to work. And according to WWD,  the designer said, "I chose iconic women who have left significant impacts on the world of science, literature, entertainment and philanthropy. They are truly are women in charge, both past and present."

There are a total of 37 paintings and the price range goes between Dhs25,708 (USD$7,000) to Dhs168,935 (USD$46,000), depending on the size.

Also, DVF is throwing a party March 7 to unveil the artwork with a guest list that will see some of those whose portraits were done present, too.

DVF has always been on the pulse when it comes to the cultural zeitgeist. Last year, she hosted a four-day event for International Women's Day, brimming with panel discussions and notable speakers championing women's rights. And most recently the brand announced it's banning fur from future collections
