Connect the dots: A Yayoi Kusama art exhibition in Sharjah
Patterns and polka dots
The Sharjah Art Foundation is hosting a curated exhibition showcasing the visionary masterpieces of Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, titled Yayoi Kusama: Dot Obsessions. Regarded as one of the leading pioneers of pop art, Kusama was voted the world's most popular artist in 2014, thanks to her extensive use of patterns and dots, which she utilises in her various art disciplines — think painting, sculpture, film and performance.
Now Kusama has brought her works to the Middle East, four years after her must-have collaboration with the French luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton in 2012, which was available at the Louis Vuitton flagship, Mall of the Emirates. This time, apart from her sculptures, as well as a vast collection of earlier works – paper and collagecome The Obliteration Room – a highlight of the new exhibition. Here, visitors are encouraged to deconstruct the appearance of a typical domestic scenario through the use of vibrantly coloured circular stickers. Then, behind another door is The Dots Obsession Room, which offers a full sensory Kusama experience with its inflatable polka-dotted balls and the visual illusions it elicits.
