Drawing inspiration from the East, guests at last night’s ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ themed Met Gala spent every bit as much time deliberating over beauty details as they did over their lavish, one-of-a-kind, stylised gowns and ensembles.

Starting from the top down, the oriental themes was expressed though sleek centre parted hair (hello Kendall Jenner and Joan Smalls) and a medley of slick evening knots in various high to low placements (see FKA Twigs for up high, and Poppy Delevingne and Jennifer Lawrence for lower looks) and tightly pulled central top ponytils, see Beyonce’s Barbie-esque do.

Sharply winged eyes dominated the make-up design, lending a graphic calligraphic edge to the famous faces. Red was the presiding shade for lips reflecting the many hues incorporated in the fashion choices. Rihanna went for a graphic horizontal brow to great effect, and brow queen, Cara Delevingne, continued painting below the neck, adding an artistic Chinese blossom design in colour, to her arms and chest.
